TEXAS STATE
BPCRS CHAMPIONSHIP

1998

The 3rd annual Texas State Black Powder Cartridge Championship was contested May 16-17 at the range at Fort Chadbourne outside of Blackwell, Texas. The weather and company were great but that ever changing South wind got the better of many shooters.

Those who think that a 4-5 mile per hour change in wind velocity from over the back won’t matter much have never shot at the Chadbourne range. Up, down, left, right. That was the general order of hits for the unsuspecting shooter who had the misfortune to misread the wind changes.

We had 50 shooters vying for the prize and three full banks of targets. This was one of the smoothest running matches I have ever attended for that number of contestants and a salute goes out to the Chadbourne group, particularly Richard Beck and Karen Wilson. Richard is the President of the Fort Chadbourne BPCRS club and was the driving force behind the arrangements, squadding, and procurement of target setters. Karen Wilson was the statistician and registrar and did a fantastic job.

The Yaupon Creek club acquitted themselves quite admirably on the Chadbourne range, particularly since most of us had never seen the range, much less fired a shot on it. The berms are a chalky white caliche or limestone and the black targets really stand out against that backdrop, making them very easy to see, regardless of the lighting conditions. Notice that I didn’t say easier to hit. Chadbourne usually has an over the shoulder south wind and the gusty changes make for extremely difficult shot placement, particularly at the longer ranges.

Of the Yaupon Creek contestants who faired well are Roger McMillin, high Senior on both days; Tom Berwick took High Master for the Tournament; and Billy Mills won the second day of competition with a 32 and took the 2nd overall trophy.

Billy had the opportunity to set a range record of 35 on the final day of competition after taking down an amazing 7 (SEVEN) chickens to give him a total of 25 going into the final bank of targets, the pigs. Unfortunately, that was when the wind was gusting from behind, causing erratic vertical strings and Billy left 3 pigs standing. Still, he posted a personal best 32 and had quite a "peanut gallery" watching his efforts on the final berm.

Fort Chadbourne’s own Gary Stickland won the overall match with a respectable 57 of a possible 80. The next 3 places were tied at 50 each. Billy Mills took 2nd overall by virtue of his amazing chicken count. Holly Long took 3rd overall, as wells as High Woman, after going to the 2nd tiebreaker of turkeys by besting Tom Berwick in that category. That left Tom as the high Master.

The AAA Champion was Bill Bagwell, the AA Champ was Bill Richey, the A Champ was Johnnie Day and the B Champ was Boyd Evans. As previously mentioned, the High Senior as Roger McMillin.

The team championship was decided by a slim 2 points, with the first place team compiling 142, 2nd place was 141, and the 3rd place team of Tom Berwick, Mike Hughes, and Lee Johnson at 140.

The State Championship for next year has been offered to the Fort Chadbourne club but they have not yet decided to accept. I hope they decide to accept as they hosted a great match and I believe everyone had a fantastic time. Congratulations to the Fort Chadbourne club and to all of the competitors and winners.
