|We had enough light left to
have quick Buffalo Match and 5 shooters decided they would give "Whitey" some
lead. Zack Chmelik, our new Junior class competitor, tried his hand as well, getting the
full Black Powder Cartridge initiation.
It took a while to get most competitors "on target" as they either had new loads, new rifles, or both to get sighted in. Tom Berwick was trying a new duplex load he intended to use at the Creedmore Nationals later this year and there was a noticeable difference in velocity requiring a lowering of the sight from the Black Powder only setting.
Gary Krutilek and Tom were tied with identical 5 hit 1 gong scores but we had yet to see David Pierce make his attempt. David had 4 hits and 1 gong going into his last shot, and, you guessed it, the last shot was a gong hit giving him the "title" of Buffalo Master this weekend.
Zack Chmelik, in only his first competition, decided to give the Buffalo a try. Unable to maintain contact with the stock was one of his problems, and the other was no recoil pad that would fit his size. As a result, Zack redefined the concept of flinching but did manage to get a hit on the big buffalo silhouette.
On a technical note, the duplex load Tom was shooting have him 1390fps velocity and was extremely clean burning. This compares with about 1225fps for the black powder only load. By the way, recoil increases quite a bit with load.
